We conduct research through interdisciplinary collaborative research teams and post-doctoral Luc Hoffmann Fellows aimed at delivering solutions, tools, and knowledge to the conservation community, policy and decision-makers. For more information on the Luc Hoffmann Institute, please visit http://luchoffmanninstitute.org/

Background:
With 3 billion people set to enter the middle class in the next 30 years, how we consume and what we produce will define sustainability.

This future reality not only demands that we develop alternative approaches but also that we adapt our current systems of consumption and production in order to build a resilient society that responds to the natural systems upon which it depends. Innovations are needed in business models, public policies and expenditures, regulatory and fiscal mechanisms, construction and building standards, education systems and lifestyles choices.

The research and synthesis we produce informs policies and practices that will reduce humanity’s footprint, increase sustainability, and increasing resource-use efficiency. Current research in this area includes efforts to plot a course toward low-carbon and sustainable economies, work exploring the impact of commodity certification standards, and research examining the role of cities in reducing global footprint.
Major Functions:
Research at the Luc Hoffmann Institute is divided into three primary programmes, called workstreams, each staffed by a research lead.

The research lead of each workstream is responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of collaborative research focused on the major topics within the workstream, linking synergies within workstream projects, allocating core funding among projects, maintaining workstream budgets, and working with other Luc Hoffmann Institute staff, WWF network offices, and external collaborators to secure external funding for collaborative projects.

The research leads work together, and with the Luc Hoffmann Institute director, to build the research portfolio of the institute, advance both academic and non-academic products coming from the research, connect with the global WWF network to assess the research needs of major WWF conservation programmes, and monitor and evaluate the impact of the work we produce.

Sun Bear Husbandry Volunteer- Indonesia

Orangutan Foundation International is seeking self motivated, independent volunteers to work with the Malayan sun bears it currently houses at the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine (OCCQ) facility in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The OCCQ currently takes in and houses all animals in need including the local subspecies of Malayan sun bear. These bears sometimes arrive at OFI’s facilities injured or traumatized after being captured from the wild; many have been confiscated by local authorities after being kept as pets in poor conditions. OFI has built a one hectare forest enclosure at the OCCQ which now houses several adult and juvenile sun bears we are unable to reintroduce into the wild. OFI’s Sun Bear Rehabilitation Program selects and rehabilitates any bear cubs that are healthy and deemed fit for reintroduction back into the wild. The Sun Bear Husbandry Volunteer will work at the OCCQ facility with local staff and other sun bear Rehabilitators to care for these adult and juvenile bears as well as any cubs involved in OFI’s sun bear rehabilitation program. Volunteers will help with feeding, enclosure cleaning, enrichment, repairs and monitoring of all bears at the OCCQ.

Work Plan:
Duties may vary widely throughout the volunteer placement and there will be no shortage of variety or volume of volunteer tasks. Duties are very much self delegated, so a high degree of self motivation is required for the sun bear volunteer. Physical contact with the adult and juvenile sun bears is expected and we encourage volunteers to form a bond with the bears to enable a good working relationship as well as to enrich the lives of the bears within our care.

Volunteering with Orangutan Foundation International (OFI)

Orangutan Foundation International protects 6,000 wild orangutans in Tanjung Puting National Park, in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Facilities include 16 guard posts throughout the park and numerous staffed feeding stations in addition to the Orangutan Care Center & Quarantine (OCCQ), which rehabilitates 330 young orangutans and prepares them for return to the wild. The majority of individuals are under 10 years old. The Centre consists of a central clinic and units housing the older individuals, while the outlying juvenile units and the medical quarantine facility are set in the surrounding 80 hectare forest. Most of the orangutans are very well-habituated to humans. They arrive in the OCCQ by confiscation from homes, black markets, entertainment industry, and abusive zoos.

Volunteering for OFI can have a big impact on your life and on the lives of the thousands of orangutans we fight to protect. Each year, OFI is grateful to receive many kind inquiries from volunteers willing to spend weeks, months, even years in Kalimantan, helping in the Orangutan Care Centre or in Tanjung Puting National Park. For our successful long-term volunteers, OFI is pleased to be able to offer letters of reference that will serve as testimony of their dedication to our organization and the quality of the contribution they have made to our cause. Volunteers are expected to submit a final report on what they have learned, experienced, and accomplished during their tenure with OFI.

Life at the OCC&Q:

The OCCQ is situated in the village of Pasir Panjang, a 15 minute drive from the small city of Pangkalan Bun. This city has an airport and is situated in the south of the province of Kalimantan Tengah, Borneo, Indonesia. Volunteers work on a daily basis in the Orangutan Care Centre and Quarantine in Pasir Panjang. Most of the locals speak rudimentary or no English. Languages are Indonesian and local Dayak dialect. The staff working hours are 8:00 to 16:00, with a lunch break at around noon. If desired, the volunteer may take one day off a week.

Living arrangements are typically with a local family homestay. Living conditions are basic, with limited running water, no landlines or Internet (although internet is available a 10 minute ride away in the town). The quality of care in the homes varies, from simple room accommodation to cooking and laundry. OFI makes an effort to arrange homestays for all its interns and volunteers, but there is an element of unpredictability in any such arrangements. In case of emergency, hotel/motel accommodations are present in Pangkalan Bun and even closer to Pasir Panjang.
Program Costs and Requirements:

Volunteers will be expected to cover International flights to Jakarta Indonesia as well as domestic flights to Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan Tengah. Room and board ranges from 2,200,000 IDR to 3,000,000 IDR per month in Pasir Panjang: includes three basic meals a day, electricity, and accommodation. Additional funds should be budgeted for miscellaneous personal expenses. There are small local shops nearby. Volunteers will also be responsible for the cost of initial visa which OFI will help you acquire, as well as renewals 3 times during the 6 months. (approx. 1,000,000 IDR average each trip). Volunteers are responsible for basic field equipment.

The following documents are required from all volunteers prior to departure:

Reports to: Programme Manager, Coastal Forests Programme
Supervises: Staff on site
Grade: A3
Duration Two years, renewable
Date: March 2014

I. Mission of the Department:
The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) is one of the World's largest and most respected independent conservation organizations. It’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world’s biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. The Coastal Forests Programme (CFP) contributes to this global mission by ensuring that the coastal forest ecosystems of Cameroon are ecologically functional, key flagship species populations are thriving and contributing to the local and national economy, and the forest ecosystems are contributing to global climate stability. In pursuit of this mission, the WWF signed two memoranda of understanding with the Programme for the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources – South West Region (PSMNR-SWR), which is a development program of the Republic of Cameroon. The programme is co-financed by the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW in cooperation with GIZ. The first memorandum covered the period 2006-2011 (Phase I), and the second MoU started on October 1, 2011 and is expected to run through to September 30, 2016 (Phase II). The goal of Phase II is to contribute towards the preservation of high-value ecosystems in South-West Region, thereby contributing to improved livelihoods of the surrounding communities in a sustainable manner. The purpose is sustainable forest and wildlife management by affected stakeholders for their benefit, with special emphasis on the poorer segments of the local populations. The Programme has the following results:

PhD opportunity - Land management strategies to enhance ecosystem services in production landscapes- Australia

We seek to understand how production landscapes can be most effectively managed to enhance the delivery of multiple ecosystem services. Contrasting options to achieve this goal are referred to as land sharing and land sparing, which represent endpoints of a continuum of land management strategies. As part of a recently awarded Australian Research Council Discovery Project, our aim is to undertake a rigorous assessment of the environmental and economic implications of land management strategies across three continents.

This PhD project will develop and apply new decision-support technology to evaluate land management strategies over whole landscapes for multiple ecosystem services. The project could potentially involve a range of techniques including landscape modelling, land use optimisation, scenario analysis, generation of data on ecosystem service benefits, regional climate modelling, and elicitation of information from experts. There is flexibility in relation to the ecosystem services and techniques that the successful PhD candidate will focus on, with options ranging from food production, biodiversity, energy, water, carbon sequestration, to regional climate regulation, amongst others. The successful candidate will focus on the intensive agricultural zone of continental Australia, with particular focus on the Brigalow Belt bioregion of Queensland. There will also be opportunities to be involved in projects undertaken in Central Kalimantan and British Columbia.

Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree with first-class Honours, Master of Science or MPhil with significant research components. Candidates from diverse disciplines are welcome to apply. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated capacity and aptitude for conducting research and it is desirable that they possess or seek to obtain skills in ecological and economic modelling, and spatial and statistical analysis. The candidate will work jointly with scientists across multiple disciplines (including biodiversity conservation, geography, environmental science and environmental economics) at The University of Queensland, CSIRO and University of British Columbia. The supervisory team will include: Assoc. Prof. Kerrie Wilson (UQ), Prof. Clive McAlpine (UQ), Elizabeth Law (UQ/UBC), and Dr Brett Bryan (CSIRO). Resources are available to support the PhD research as part of the broader project.

Prospective applicants should also apply or be the recipient of an APA (or equivalent) scholarship. Interested students should provide a professional CV and a short letter of interest to Assoc. Prof. Kerrie Wilson (k.wilson2@uq.edu.au).
