Zoological Field Assistants - Bird Island

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
At Bird Island, South Georgia, Zoological Field Assistants will be recruited to help carry out fieldwork on seabirds and seals. Bird Island is small (7 km in length) and forms part of the South Georgia archipelago where it is buffeted by both prevailing westerlies and cold winds from Antarctica. It has a high annual rainfall and variable snow cover during winter. In summer tens of thousands of seals and hundreds of thousands of seabirds breed there (including 2 species of penguin and 4 species of albatross). Up to 10 staff live in a modern research station with a satellite link to the outside world and comfortable accommodation.
The successful applicants will work and live on Bird Island continuously, living with other residents and up to 6 summer only visitors. Whilst everyone is assigned duties to keep the research station running (including cooking and cleaning), the residents have extra responsibilities (after pre-deployment training), such as providing IT, communications and medical cover. They will each be partly responsible for one element of a long term monitoring programme. The learning curve is very steep and so all candidates must have previous experience of handling appropriate wild animals, but BAS will provide a finishing school (at Bird Island) to hone these skills.
Work in the wildlife breeding season at Bird Island will be very intensive, with long hours of fieldwork and data preparation, so it is important to be well organised. Data are collated using databases and by submitting reports, observing strict deadlines at frequent intervals. The results underpin key research into regional and global change processes based on seabird and seal life histories, reproductive success, behaviour and diet.
The position of Zoological Field Assistant offers a unique opportunity for highly motivated and disciplined individuals with relevant fieldwork skills and a keen interest in wildlife, who will adapt well to small island living in a challenging sub-Antarctic environment.
Qualifications: Degree in biology or zoology; experience of remote, unsupervised fieldwork and animal handling skills (i.e. of appropriate wild animals in their natural habitat). Applicants must be competent and efficient in managing, analysing and reporting on large data sets. Meticulous time management, attention to detail and effective communication are important attributes. Candidates should also be comfortable working in a small and vibrant science community.
Duration: Appointments will be for a period of approximately 18 months, with a possibility of extension.
Salary: Salary starts at £23,700 per annum, rising annually. Additionally, upon completion of a successful tour, you will receive a 10% bonus. BAS provides all training required, outdoor and work clothing, tools, and accommodation (whilst in the Antarctic).
On-line application forms and further information are available on our website at www.antarctica.ac.uk/employment. These are also available from the Human Resources Section, British Antarctic Survey, High Cross, Madingley Road, Cambridge, CB3 0ET.
Tel: (01223) 221508.

Please quote reference: BAS 07/14
Closing date for receipt of application forms is 20th April 2014
Interviews are scheduled to be held on w/c 23rd June 2014

We welcome applications from all sections of the community. People from ethnic minorities are currently under-represented and their applications are particularly welcome.
You will need to be physically capable and medically fit to work in Antarctic conditions.

Responsabilidades principales:
1. Obtener los datos socioeconómicos necesarios para el proyecto y contribuir a su análisis;
2. Capacitar al personal de las áreas naturales protegidas en el desarrollo de Planes de Pueblos Indígenas (PPI) y en el MP;
3. Verificar el cumplimiento de las salvaguardas en las actividades financiadas en las áreas naturales protegidas;
4. Preparar los PPI para los sitios elegibles para los sub-proyectos;
5. Organizar los talleres de difusión de la convocatoria de los sub-proyectos de acuerdo a los PPI;
6. Asegurar que en la revisión de propuestas de sub-proyectos se atiendan los criterios del MGAS;
7. Verificar el cumplimiento del MGAS y de los PPI en los sub-proyectos;
8. Generar informes de progreso del MGAS con información desagregada por género;
9. Reportar sobre las actividades cotidianas al Coordinador Regional del Proyecto;

ROSEATE TERN TECHNICIAN-Massachusetts EUA

ROSEATE TERN TECHNICIAN. 7 July - 20 September, 2014. Cape Cod National Seashore, MA. **Opportunity to begin work in May or June on a Virginia Tech Red Knot project on the Eastern Shore, VA. Details below.** Assist graduate student in a collaborative research project investigating the behavioral and demographic effects of disturbance on Roseate Tern parent-offspring interactions during the pre-migratory staging period.

Study Background: The Northwest Atlantic population of Roseate Terns was listed as endangered in 1987 and has been intensively managed on the breeding grounds; however, little is known about their activities after they leave the breeding sites. The population of Roseate Terns has declined by 25% since 2000 despite relatively good productivity and constant adult survival. Nearly the entire Northwest Atlantic population of Roseate Terns is thought to stage at Cape Cod, MA before departing for migration to South America. Our study will attempt to determine the effects of disturbance during the staging period on parent-offspring interactions and hatch-year Roseate Tern survival. SEABIRD RESEARCH ASSISTANTS and VOLUNTEERS

Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program manages seven island research stations off the coast of Maine that include active and former restoration sites for Arctic, Common, Roseate, and Least Terns, Atlantic Puffins, Black Guillemots, Razorbills, Laughing Gulls, Common Eiders, Leach’s Storm-Petrels, and wading birds. Work includes, but is not limited to: monitoring seabird populations, productivity, and growth; conducting seabird diet studies; banding and resighting birds; removing invasive vegetation; educating island visitors; and assisting with predator management.

Positions require primitive camping and working on offshore islands. All participants live in or near the bird colonies in rustic conditions (limited solar electricity, no running water; composting toilet only) and work 7 days/week, weather permitting. At each island, a cabin or wall tent serves as the base of field operations, and staff sleep in their own tents.  Research Assistants and Full-season Volunteers will work on one of 5 field teams: Stratton Island, Eastern Egg Rock, Matinicus Rock, Seal Island, or Casco Bay area Islands (includes Jenny, Pond, and Outer Green Islands). Short-term volunteers should be available for a minimum of two weeks, and may work on one or more islands, depending on interest and dates of availability.  Island research teams are comprised of 2 to 6 people, led by the Island Supervisor, and are determined by island size, seabird colony composition, and workload. Days can be long (0600 to 2000 hrs) and include one to two 3-hour observation stints each day in a small wooden blind.  All staff participate in seabird research and camp maintenance duties.  Pay of $262.50/week, plus food and worker’s compensation insurance are provided for Research Assistants. Food is provided for volunteers, but they are responsible for their own insurance.

At offshore field stations, Research Assistants will spend the entire season on island.  At inshore field stations there will be periodic access to the mainland via small boat (about every 1-2 weeks).  Research Assistants and Volunteers will participate in all aspects of seabird research, monitoring, and management. Most positions begin on May 26 and end on August 15 (two or more Research Assistants are needed beginning in early or mid May).

Qualifications: Applicants for Research Assistant positions should have a B.S. (or be an upper level undergraduate) in biology or a related field, and have at least one full season of previous field experience. Previous field experience is not required for Volunteers, but applicants should have a desire to participate in seabird research and learn new field skills.  Applicants must be in excellent physical condition (capable of climbing over rugged terrain and able to lift approximately 50 lbs.), have wilderness camping experience, be able to work independently and as part of a team, be capable of working long hours outdoors in variable weather conditions, and be able to work well with people of diverse backgrounds. Must be able to sit in a small blind for three hours and maintain focus on data collection. A sense of humor, willingness to learn, dedication to wildlife conservation, and interest in seabirds and isolated islands are basic requirements.

To Apply:  Applications must be submitted on-line. For Research Assistant positions visit www.audubon.org/audubon-career-center for further details and to apply (search words: seabirds; Maine). Applications must include a resume, cover letter, and a minimum of three references. Please indicate in your cover letter if you would like to be considered for a volunteer position if not selected for a paid position.  Applications for Research Assistants are accepted through Feb 15, 2014. Details and applications for volunteering can be found at http://projectpuffin.audubon.org/volunteer-8 and Volunteer applications are accepted through March 15, 2014. For questions regarding the positions contact Paula Shannon (EM: pshannon AT audubon.org).  For further information on the Seabird Restoration Program and research islands, visit http://projectpuffin.audubon.org/island-research-program.
