Positions for PhD candidates and trainees at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission- Italia

The Land Resource Management Unit (Ispra, Italy) of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission is looking for a PhD Candidate and a Trainee.
1) The PhD candidate will support our global modelling activities and improve means to assess impact assessment on biodiversity and ecosystem services considering different policy scenarios affecting our environment (e.g. climate change, biofuel, agriculture, …). In the context of the PhD project, the objective is to develop, implement, and test methodologies quantifying loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services in areas where land cover change is occurring.
Main tasks include:
• the development of methods and indicators for quantifying loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services at the global scale
• the development of associated algorithms to compute the above indicators in support to our web based modelling services (see http://dopa.jrc.ec.europa.eu/ );
• the publication of use cases illustrating the methodology.

2) We are looking for a highly motivated trainee to support our work on monitoring the sustainable use of natural resources, in particular in the context of protected areas. The objective of the project is to map global conservation efforts, with a focus on the African Caribbean and Pacific countries, and related development funding activities.
