Wildlife Veterinarian. Botswana.


Under the guidance of the CEO of CARACAL and the Project PI (Virginia Tech), the wildlife veterinarian will provide coordination and support for all veterinary activities and other research projects as needed undertaken as part of a larger program on ecosystem health in Northern Botswana. A primary focus of this work is on infectious disease transmission at the human-wildlife interface. Work activities will involve studies that include humans, herbivores, predators, and small mammals at the terrestrial-water interface. Other major activities include water quality monitoring, laboratory studies as needed, care and management of a captive wildlife collection, and treatment of injured and orphaned animals. The candidate would be involved in any other projects and provide assistance as required to support the research and outreach activities of CARACAL.

Required:
-Veterinary Degree with at least 5 years experience
-Demonstrated experience in small and/or large animal care, and surgery
Wildlife capture experience (zoological or field based) will elevate the placement of the candidate.

Hiring mechanism: Contract hire under Virginia Tech with secondment and supervision under the local lead agency CARACAL.
Timeframe: Period of appointment: 12 months. As soon as possible - pending veterinary registration with the Botswana Government. Contract renewable based on performance.
Salary: US $1000.00 per month (non negotiable).
