Are you passionate about conserving one of the world’s rarest birds?

There are fewer than 400 Wirebirds left on the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena, but every year many fall victim to predators such as feral cats and rats. An exciting new conservation programme will now seek to address this major threat to Wirebird survival and help secure the future of the species.

The new Wirebird Predator Control programme will research the impact of feral cats, and implement predator control at key Wirebird sites across the island. It will also raise awareness of the issue and encourage responsible cat ownership in the local community.

The Project Co-ordinator will be a key post, responsible for managing a team of four people to deliver the objectives of the programme. You will also be responsible for ensuring that research is carried out to a high professional standard, both in the office and in the field.

The successful candidate will have at least 3 years project management experience and be able to demonstrate experience of research. You will have a degree in environmental sciences or a relevant subject. You will need to be a practical, hands on person who can cope equally with managing work programmes and coordinating research in the field. A lot of your time will be spent outdoors so you need to be physically fit and able to cope with all weather conditions. You will be a good communicator who is able to generate community support for the programme’s conservation objectives.

This is a unique opportunity to experience life in one of the world’s most remote and beautiful islands. The salary being offered is highly competitive by island standards.

Please email Jamie Roberts, Director of the St Helena National Trust sth.nattrust@cwimail.sh, explaining why you are the right person to lead this project and take forward Wirebird conservation.

Deadline: CV and covering letter by Sunday 5th June 2011.

Interviews will be held in mid June at the RSPB head office in Sandy, Bedfordshire.

The Wirebird predator conservation programme, managed by St Helena National Trust and the RSPB, is funded by Defra and the Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP).
