Hatchery Technician

This is a collaborative position to be shared between the Sitka Sound Science Center (SSSC) Sheldon Jackson Hatchery and Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (NSRAA). The employee will work approximately 80% of his/her time at the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery, and another 20% of his/her time at NSRAA facilities, with some variation possible. The successful candidate will provide for transportation to and from Sitka, Alaska, at the beginning and end of the hiring period. Housing will be provided free of charge at a communal apartment within walking distance of the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery. Please visit the SSSC Web-site at http://sitkasoundsciencecenter.org/ for more information about our hatchery and other SSSC programs. The potential exists for an extension of employment with NSRAA operations starting on/near June 1, 2010 and running through the summer. The NSRAA Web-site may be found at the following link: http://www.nsraa.org/

The Sheldon Jackson Hatchery is located at SSSC, in Sitka, Alaska. The hatchery was an integral part of the Environmental Science Program at the Sheldon Jackson College (SJC) until academic programs ceased at SJC in 2007. Hatchery programs have continued under SSSC, which currently produce 100,000 chinook smolt, 150,000 coho salmon smolt, 1 million chum salmon fry, and 1 million pink salmon fry. The intent of SSSC is to maintain these fish culture operations in order to provide various institutions with a venue for training students in fisheries and hatchery science, while at the same time contributing salmon to the common property fisheries of Sitka Sound and Southeast Alaska.

Duties for this position are to assist the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery Manager with all aspects of Pacific salmon culture, including hatchery incubation procedures, fry and smolt rearing, coded-wire-tagging operations, and general site/facility maintenance. Areas of responsibility will also include supervising hatchery volunteers, maintaining hatchery records, and recording pertinent environmental data. Duties with NSRAA will likely mirror those previously described, though will be conducted on a more limited basis than duties performed at the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery.
Qualifications: An Associate Degree in fisheries or related field is expected. Prior experience working at a salmon hatchery is preferred, and may be considered in lieu of the education requirement. Additionally, sound physical fitness is necessary due to the physical nature of hatchery work (i.e., ability to carry 50 pounds for distances up to 100 yards). The successful candidate will not be permitted to house pets, and will provide for their transportation to and from Sitka, Alaska.
Salary: $12 per hour, plus free housing
