Biological Science Technician

Job Description: Job Description at Huron WMD: 20 to 40% of responsibilities will include avian monitoring, such as: grassland-nesting passerines, waterfowl pair counts, bald eagle nests, shorebird and breeding bird survey routes, colonial waterbirds, and bird banding. Forty-five to 75% of responsibilities will include habitat monitoring, such as: survey habitat using a GPS and develop a vegetative cover map using GIS; conduct grassland community inventory to monitor vegetative response to management treatments; and record vegetation structure and litter depth measurements in conjunction with bird surveys. Five to 15% of time will consist of other duties as assigned and is designed to ensure a well-rounded and diverse field season: environmental education, data entry & summarization, management (e.g., biological control), conservation planning, or maintenance. Training will be provided on field I.D. of waterfowl, grassland birds, and plant species; GIS (ArcMap 9.2) and GPS (Trimble GeoXT); ATV safety; and CPR/First Aid. There will be many opportunities to learn about prairie wildlife, habitat management, and grassland ecosystems as part of work assignments and day-to-day interactions with staff. Opportunities may also exist to accompany personnel to workshops or field trips. Housing options include on-site housing (located at shop area 8 miles west of Huron) or inexpensive apartments in Huron.
