One volunteer field technician position available July 23 to September 25 (dates somewhat flexible) to assist on a study of scoter moulting ecology in southeast Alaska. Travel (Vancouver, BC to Juneau, AK), food and accommodation will be provided. Field activities include: surveys of scoter flocks; capture, banding, and radio-marking scoters; and radio telemetry (locations and foraging observations).
Applicants with the following skills are encouraged to apply:
- Small craft handling/marine safety
- Waterfowl ID
- Bird capture/handling
- Telemetry (especially with null/peak systems)
- Navigation with GPS, map & compass
- Wilderness first aid
The study site is in Seymour Canal on Admiralty Island, south of Juneau, in the Tongass National Forest. In addition to field work, all crew will be responsible for sharing general camp duties (cooking, gear maintenance, etc).
