SEABIRD HABITAT RESTORATION INTERNS (2)

Two interns are needed for seabird habitat restoration projects in the Channel Islands National Park, Ventura, California. Position durations are six months each; preferred start dates are June 15 and August 15, 2008. Work duties during the nesting season (through October) include monitoring breeding seabirds (Xantus’s murrelets, ashy storm-petrels, Cassin’s auklets, and brown pelicans) and cultivating native plants for habitat restoration. Fall and winter fieldwork will focus on revegetation efforts (cultivation, outplanting, and weeding) on Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz Islands. Candidates must be in good physical position, have a strong interest in both seabird and terrestrial ecology, be willing to live on remote islands for extended periods of time (typically two weeks per month), and be able to hike while carrying heavy loads over rugged terrain. Previous experience with small boat operation, seabird surveys, and plant identification and husbandry are preferred. A stipend of $1,290/month plus an education credit will be provided through the Student Conservation Association.
