Ecological Management Intern
Agency: Little St. Simons Island
Location: Little St. Simons Island, Georgia
Job Description: This is a full-time seasonal position (May 1 August 31, 2010) on an ecologically intact barrier island on the coast of Georgia. The staff of LSSI works to preserve and improve the natural resources of the island, and educate others during this process. The intern will assist the ecological manager with a variety of projects that may include but are not limited to:
" Conducting lethal raccoon management to help protect sea turtle, seabird and shorebird nests.
" Assisting with field work associated with American Oystercatcher nest project.
" Filling in for turtle technician one day per week.
" Monitoring for unauthorized boats and people on beach.
" Assisting with fire ant monitoring and treatment project.
" Assisting in setting up and beginning inventory on snags.
" Maintaining and enhance native plantings around guest compound.
" Assisting with installing and monitoring deer exclosures.
" Monitoring and treat invasive plants.
" Assisting with vegetation monitoring after prescribed fire.
" Developing a presentation to share with guests about intern/management duties.
Qualifications: B.S. in Biology or related field. Must have ability to work with a wide range of people and staff in a remote island setting. This position will require a lot of time working on the beach and the applicant must be willing to endure hot and buggy conditions during most of the internship. The position requires that the successful applicant live on the island. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate spouses/ children due to a limited amount of housing. No pets are allowed on the island.
Salary: $7.50/hour + lodging and food
