STAFF SCIENTIST RESEARCH Position in MARINE SCIENCE

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI; www.stri.si.edu), headquartered in the Republic of Panamá, invites qualified applicants to build on a 100-year legacy of research in the tropics and establish an independent research program in marine science. Themes may include coastal processes, animal behavior, physiology, ecology, molecular evolution and adaptation of marine organisms, microbial ecology paleo- and archaeo-biology. Previous experience working in the tropics is not required. The successful candidate will have outstanding opportunities to develop an independent research program, mentor post-doctoral fellows and graduate students from an international community, and collaborate with Smithsonian staff and the Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGeo; marinegeo.si.edu) program.
STRI is headquartered in the Republic of Panama, with marine laboratories accessing two oceans, modern research facilities including environmental monitoring equipment, throughout the Republic of Panamá. The incumbent will join a vibrant scientific community of 30 staff scientists, an international community of over 1500 scientific visitors per year, including fellows and interns. Staff scientists maintain diverse research programs in the ecology, evolution, physiology, developmental biology, and behavior of marine and terrestrial organisms and ecosystems, both ancient and modern, and the role of human interactions in shaping tropical environments.
The position is full-time research and no formal teaching is required. However, opportunities for teaching are available through graduate training programs with affiliated universities.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in marine science, and show evidence of outstanding research potential, including publication record, and extramural funding.
The position is based in Panama. Early- to mid-career candidates are especially encouraged to apply. Annual salary is commensurate with experience. Laboratory set-up and relocation expenses are provided. Additional allowances may apply, including family education allowances for international schools.
To Apply: Submit a single file with a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research accomplishments and interests, PDFs of three to five significant publications, and the names and contact information of three references to strisearch@si.edu. Address inquiries to Dr. Mark Torchin, Chair, Marine Biology Search Committee, at torchinm@si.edu
Positions are open until filled; review of applications will begin on November 15, 2017 and interviews will commence shortly thereafter.
STRI is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to diversity in its workforce. Appointments are made regardless of nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation. STRI is currently filling several staff scientist positions so applications from dual-career couples are encouraged from those with relevant research interests and outstanding scientific track records.
