Effects of browsing on butterfly abundance within vs. outside Elk Island National Park
FIELD ASSISTANT OPPORTUNITY
One assistant is needed to help with field data collection for a graduate student project studying the effects of ungulate browsing on focal butterfly species and their larval host plants.
Location:
Elk Island National Park, Cooking Lake, Miquelon Lake and Edgar T. Jones Provincial Recreational Areas, all approximately 45 minutes east of Edmonton, Alberta.
Responsibilities:
-Detailed vegetation surveys in circular plots to inventory shrub and tree species near wetlands
- Pollard walk butterfly surveys
- Ungulate (moose, deer, elk, bison) pellet counts along linear transects
Duration:
- September 1 – October 15, 2010
Qualifications:
- Recent graduate or senior undergraduate (3rd or 4th year,) of a BSc program in ecology, animal biology, conservation biology, environmental sciences, or natural resource science
- Strong hiker on and often off unmaintained trails in dense shrub cover
- Familiarity with trees and shrubs of the western boreal forest and aspen parkland preferred
- Orienteering with handheld GPS unit and compass preferred
Wage:
- $1,700-1,800/month
- Food and accommodation will not be provided
- Transport from Edmonton to field site and return will be provided
