Volunteer Field Research Assistant Puerto Rico


Southwestern Puerto Rico
2.5-3 months from early/mid- September to late-November 2013

VOLUNTEER FIELD RESEARCH ASSISTANTS NEEDED for research on alarm calling and breeding biology of the SMOOTH-BILLED ANI (Crotophaga ani), a joint-nesting species in the cuckoo family. This affords a valuable opportunity to learn field biology skills. Three field assistants are needed to work in Southwestern Puerto Rico for approximately 2.5-3 months from early/mid- September to late-November 2013. Successful applicants must provide their own airfare to San Juan or Mayaguez, P.R. Travel within Puerto Rico, basic food and shared accommodations will be provided.

DUTIES:
Field observation, documenting behaviour and predator encounters, re-sighting colour-banded birds, trapping with mist-netting, nest- and funnel-traps, locating nests, nest checks, handling adults, nestlings, and eggs, banding, GPS-mapping territories, video and audio recording, and data entry. Field work involves carrying equipment including extension ladders, and climbing ladders up to 32’ during nest checks. Field playback experiments will involve assisting with video/audio set up and documentation of alarm call playback and presentation of predator mounts to ani groups. Assistants will be required to work early mornings, split shifts, and long days outside in sun and heat and must be available seven days per week, although there will be regular time off (6 days on, 1 day off). Days off may be coordinated among the field team and some opportunity for recreational travel in Puerto Rico will be scheduled, time and data collection permitting.

Qualifications:
Previous field experience, particularly with birds, is an asset but not required. Good physical health, ability to climb ladders & ascend to heights from 6-36’, a love of the outdoors and (dry) tropical environments, attention to detail, readiness to learn, problem solving skills and self-motivation are valuable assets. Assistants should be able to work well as a team and also alone and unsupervised. Valid driver’s license and experience driving standard transmission vehicle as well as basic Spanish language skills are also assets.
