Research experience for undergraduates, Summer 2012 PANAMA

.
One undergraduate student will be selected to participate in a 10-week tropical herpetology study in El Copé, Panama. My lab has been conducting intensive assessments of amphibian fauna at El Copé in central Panama for 13 years, covering a period before Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), during the epizootic phase, and now at the enzootic stage. We will use these data to understand habitat use of amphibians prior to Bd’s arrival, how Bd has selectively eliminated amphibians occupying Bd+ microhabitats, and how amphibians currently utilize infected and uninfected microhabitats. The student will work closely with a graduate student to create a project to quantify factors (e.g., habitat use, thermal physiology, behavior, abundance, density) that may influence amphibian species-specific responses to infection by Bd. Applicants should be willing to work in inclement field conditions (e.g., hot, humid weather, muddy conditions, long hours, biting insects, and no cell phone service). Biology background and Spanish language abilities are preferred. All applicants must have a valid passport for up to 6 months after travel. Members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands Conservation Internship

Availability
From April 2012 we have 2 vacancies for a well-qualified graduate to work as an intern on the C3 Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands Programme

Location
You will be based predominantly in a coastal field camp, working closely with Madagascar National Parks and coastal communities to deliver capacity-building, research and public outreach campaigns about marine conservation issues with opportunities to conduct turtle monitoring research, and coastal habitat mapping, throughout the North West region.

Conservation Focus
Following 5 years of highly successful community-driven marine resource management initiatives in the Indian Ocean Islands, C3 has developed a strong regional network of projects. With the chance for hands-on socio-economic and ecological field research (including turtle and dugong monitoring), capacity-building for local partner institutions, design and implementation of social marketing campaigns and a chance for keen writers to publish research findings, this internship provides a well-rounded and practical experience perfect for building a career in international marine
conservation.

Importance
With a relatively low population pressure and some of the most important biodiversity in Madagascar, the North West region is becoming a focal point for conservation efforts. Sea turtle populations are in decline worldwide and listed as endangered throughout their range. Building local capacity through education and informed research will be critical to their future survival.

Fiji and South Pacific Islands Conservation Internship

Fiji and South Pacific Islands Conservation Internship

Availability
From April 2012 we have 2 vacancies for well-qualified graduates to work as field-based interns on the C3 Fiji and South Pacific Islands Programme.

Location
You will be working from our beach based field site with a remote community on the island of Kia. Sheltered by the Great Sea Reef, the third largest barrier reef in the world, Kia is of particular significance because the community is appointed as the traditional fishers (gonedau) for Tui Macuata.

Conservation Focus
The first phase of this work is the documentation of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and socioeconomic importance of the reef and its fishery resources. The next stage is to examine the most important fisheries more closely (e.g. invertebrates, women in fisheries, turtle harvest and coral reefs). This work will involve both fisheries dependent and independent protocols, including landing site monitoring, in-water assessments of key reef species such as the Humphead Wrasse and the evaluation of CPUE.

Importance
With Western influences putting increasing pressure on traditional practices the documentation and recording of TEK is of paramount importance. Communities such as those on Kia have been successfully managing their local fisheries for generations. This 'know how' will be critical in helping to develop community-driven monitoring and management plans not only in Fiji, but in many other small developing island nations.

How to Apply

For all internship positions candidates should send in a CV and brief cover letter to Sarah Duddigan: vacancies@c-3.org.uk

See www.c-3.org.uk/internships.php for more details and please read the Internship Brief before applying.

Philippines and Micronesia Conservation Internship

Availability
From April 2012 we have 1 vacancy for well-qualified graduates to work as field-based interns on the C3 Philippines and Micronesia Programme.

Location
You will be working from our field station on the remote Busuanga Island in Northern Palawan, a biodiversity hotspot and home to one of the last remaining Dugong populations in the Philippines. This area is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty and surrounded by high limestone pinnacles that hide a maze of lagoons and pristine reefs.

Conservation Focus
Our work will begin by focusing on the dugong population and other endangered species' interactions with small scale fisheries. Your internship will involve both canoe-based observation and research of dugongs in the field as well as working within communities to help implement locally-driven marine resource management activities.

Importance
Major threats to dugongs in Philippines come from habitat loss and degradation and fishing pressure/ by-catch. The Philippines archipelago and more specifically Busuanga Island host wide areas of seagrass beds which are unfortunately being degraded due to natural processes and anthropogenic activities.
We hope to use these data to develop community-driven monitoring and management plans over the coming year to help conserve these species.

How to Apply

For all internship positions candidates should send in a CV and brief cover letter to Sarah Duddigan: vacancies@c-3.org.uk

Life Net Reserve Manager Position: Las Tangaras Nature Reserve, Mindo, ECUADOR

Life Net Reserve Manager Position: Las Tangaras Nature Reserve, Mindo, Ecuador

Life Net seeks an out-going couple with backgrounds in wildlife management, ecotourism, conservation biology, or related fields to steward and live at Las Tangaras, a private protected natural area in western Ecuador. Managers of Reserva Las Tangaras are typically needed for three months periods. Dates are somewhat flexible, but need to overlap with out-going stewards by a few days. A 3-month commitment is typical due to the readily available visa of 90 days. Longer service is an option, but stewards would need to obtain appropriate visas on their own.

Applicants handy with carpentry, home repairs, and applied natural area stewardship skills are preferred. Managers must be able to maintain trails, care for the reserve cabin and its water system, continue organic garden efforts, and further develop ecological and conservation research, ecotourism, and outreach projects at the reserve. Some research projects may also be an option.

Las Tangaras is a 49-hectare natural area and its main purpose is to provide habitat for native plants and animals, while protecting them from illegal hunting and collecting. As a buffer property on the edge of the Mindo-Namibillo Bosque Protector, Reserva Las Tangaras provides wildlife with additional habitat at elevations typically deforested for agriculture.

At Las Tangaras we encourage light levels of visitation by the "ecologically minded", such as bird-watchers, photographers, and conservation biology students. Contributions from visitors are used to maintain the reserve. Managers should be capable of the following:
1. Hosting nature-oriented guests and visitors
2. Hosting volunteer programs and student trainings related to nature reserve stewardship
3. Maintaining all trails on the reserve and entrance bridge
4. Improving trail(s) and signage from Nambillo Road to Las Tangaras (with local
landowner's permission).
5. Sustaining an organic garden and doing tree planting to attract birds and for human use.
6. Doing a research project of one’s own interest, or continuing projects, and writing a report on your experience and findings at the end of the contract period.

Life Net seeks well-educated, mature, very physically fit, and responsible couples with strong interests and/or educational backgrounds in reserve management, nature conservation, tropical ecology, birding, sustainable agriculture, ecotourism, environmental education (all or some) to steward the very bio-diverse nature reserve.

The reserve is an incredible place to live, and research and photographic opportunities abound. Life Net monitors and researches bird communities, and stewards and visiting scientists and students continue to describe plants, insects, hummingbird community dynamics, avian community structure in different forest types, and avian indicator species in mature tropical montane forest.

Duties include, reserve improvements and stewardship, care of trails, marking of trails, water system upkeep, septic system upkeep, maintenance of cabin, tools, equipment, research materials, small library. Options exist to develop visitation and earn additional donations from visitors to the area for birding trips and hikes, etc. Desirable qualifications include ability to communicate well in Spanish, experience with care of horses and interest in them, college degree in a topic related to the position, related experiences with wilderness biology field work in the tropics, interests in research and nature interpretation, experience with guiding nature or birding tours, simple bio-regional living experiences, wilderness, leave no trace camping ethics, carpentry and building skills, financial management experience, business sense, etc.

Volunteer Coordinator Assistant positions available for ICAPO’s hawksbill turtle projects in Nicaragua & El Salvador

Contact: David Melero volunteers@hawksbill.org
WWW Link: http://www.hawksbill.org

Period
A total of four Volunteer Coordinator Assistant (VCA) positions are available for the 2012 nesting season from April 15th – September 15th.

Location
The Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (ICAPO) will be conducting hawksbill sea turtle conservation volunteering programs at two sites on the Pacific coast of Central America:
•Estero Padre Ramos Natural Reserve,Chinandega,Nicaragua
•Bahia Jiquilisco Biosphere Reserve, Usulatan, El Salvador

Background Information
Only a few years ago, most researchers thought hawksbills had been extirpated in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Groundbreaking discoveries and new projects initiated by ICAPO and its partners have changed the conservation outlook for this imperiled population and provided hope for recovery. Still, hawksbill turtles in the eastern Pacific are considered one of the world’s most endangered sea turtle populations. Protection of the species in the region is among the world's most pressing sea turtle conservation issues; only a few hundred female hawksbills are estimated to nest along the entire region’s coastline. The low nesting numbers suggest that the species is unlikely to survive without coordinated conservation actions to protect eggs, increase hatchling production, generate biological information and protect key marine habitats. Working together we aim to bring the perilous eastern Pacific hawksbill back from the brink of extinction.

Due to the importance of Bahia Jiquilisco (El Salvador) and Estero Padre Ramos (Nicaragua), which hosts over 90% of the entire nesting population in the eastern Pacific, we focus on conservation efforts at these sites. We work with local community groups and national non-profit conservation organizations to carryout conservation activities. ICAPO’s hawksbill monitoring and conservation program has been running at these two sites since 2008 and 2010, respectively. Our research and conservation efforts are focused on critically endangered hawksbill turtles in the eastern Pacific, which is one of the most endangered sea turtle populations on the planet. Over 90% of hawksbill turtle nesting in the entire eastern Pacific occurs at our program sites, thus we offer a unique volunteering opportunity.

About ICAPO:
ICAPO was formally established in July 2008 to promote recovery of hawksbill turtles in the eastern Pacific. As a US 501(c)3 non-profit program, we consist of numerous individuals and organizations, experts in the field of hawksbill and sea turtle conservation, hailing from every country in the eastern Pacific from the US to Peru. We fulfill our mission to protect and recover hawksbills in the eastern Pacific by sharing information, raising awareness, forming alliances, conducting research and initiating conservation. This is achieved through close collaborations with coastal community members, scientists and policy makers throughout the region. ICAPO has established numerous conservation projects, consolidated an important body of scientific literature, and brought hawksbill turtles to the forefront of the marine conservation agenda in the eastern Pacific.

Duties
There are four Coordinator Volunteer Assistants (VCAs) positions available to help manage ICAPO’s volunteer program and community development efforts in El Salvador or in Nicaragua. The responsibilities of VCAs vary from slightly between the sites, but they generally entail coordinating the work of project volunteers, facilitating their involvement in the community, and serving as the vital link between local program staff/collaborators and volunteers.

VCAs should thus facilitate functional work between locals and foreign volunteers in terms of language. Furthermore, VCAs will coordinate with locals project staff to elaborate volunteer participation in night patrols to identify, measure and tag all adult turtles, relocate nests into hatcheries or mark them in situ, conduct daily early morning boat patrols to count turtle tracks and check status of in situ nests, monitor hatcheries around the clock, release hatchlings and conduct post hatching nest excavations. When there are no volunteers in the camp, VCAs are expected to participate in the field work. Besides sea turtle duties, other responsibilities of the VCAs will include administering food supplies. VCAs must also maintain a friendly relationship with members from local communities, as social aspects are crucial to the success of the projects. Not surprising, a high degree of independence, responsibility and commitment is expected from VCAs.

All project activities are conducted using the help of volunteers (who pay a fee to participate), which can vary in number.VCAs are expected to orient and train volunteers upon their arrival at our turtle camp and to motivate them for the period they are participating in the project.

It is important for VCAs to be aware of the fact that there may be periods of extended isolation and time in the field required by these projects, which can have adverse effects on personal moods and behaviors. Attitudes are very contagious in the project settings, thus it is crucial for VCAs to be an example by staying motivated and maintaining a positive attitude at all times, thus helping other team members to do the same.

Requirements
Please read ALL of the information carefully before applying. Preference will be given to potential applicants that meet the following requirements:

•Solid ability in both Spanish and English.
•Previous experience leading groups of volunteers
•Strong interpersonal communication skills.
•Independent, reliable and responsible.
•Motivated, positive and adaptable to unexpected situations.
•Ability to undertake physical labor during night and day in heat and rain.
•Comfortable in an isolated setting and working in a team setting.
•Previous experience working in the outdoors (especially with sea turtles).
•Available for at least one whole period of two and a half months, for one of the following periods:

o April 15th – July 1st, 2012
o July 1st – September 15th, 2012

Beca Breakthrough generation

Breakthrough Generation is the young leaders initiative of the Breakthrough Institute, a paradigm-shifting think tank committed to rejuvenating progressive thought for the 21st century. Breakthrough is best known for its climate and energy policy work, but fellows next summer will have the to work on either energy, conservation, or economic policy. Each summer, Breakthrough offers highly competitive fellowships to top young analysts, writers, and thought leaders. Fellows work closely with Breakthrough Institute staff, including Michael Shellenberger and Ted Nordhaus, Breakthrough's founders and two of Time Magazine's 2008 Heroes of the Environment. Founded in 2007, Breakthrough Generation seeks to foster the development of a new generation of leaders capable of fully grappling with the scale and complexity of today's greatest challenges.

Fellows spend ten weeks at Breakthrough's office in Oakland, CA, deeply engaged in high-level research, writing, and analysis around three program areas: energy and climate policy; conservation and the environment; and innovation & the economy. Climate change and energy policy is the most well-established work area of the Breakthrough Institute; conservation and economic policy are recent additions that BTG 2012 fellows will have the unique to help build. Research projects in our economics program will further develop previous work published by Breakthrough, including the reports "Where Good Technologies Come From" and "Manufacturing Growth." Conservation is our newest policy area and builds from a series of articles in the second issue of the Breakthrough Journal (coming soon).

For the first two weeks of the fellowship, fellows participate in Breakthrough Bootcamp, an intellectual crash course involving intensive reading, writing, and an expert lecture series designed to provide a grounding in the broad-spectrum thinking that informs Breakthrough's policy agenda. Throughout Bootcamp, fellows are encouraged to challenge themselves and their peers. Topics covered include modernization theory, social psychology, aspirational politics and philosophy, economics and innovation policy, technology policy, as well as a detailed exposure to the three respective program areas. Bootcamp is updated every year to reflect the most timely research and writing on these important issues. Click here for the 2011 Bootcamp syllabus.

For the remainder of the program, fellows work in teams on group projects relevant to Breakthrough's ongoing work, and produce policy white papers, reports, and memos. Former Breakthrough fellows have published in Harvard Law & Policy Review, San Francisco Chronicle, Baltimore Sun, and Huffington Post, and their projects have been featured in New York Times, Newsweek, Time Magazine, Financial Times, and Wall Street Journal, among others, as well as in Congressional testimony.

During and after the summer, fellows will have access to continued career support from the Breakthrough staff and a network of BT Gen alumni, many of whom now hold important positions in public policy, the energy sector, and the nonprofit sector.

Fellows will work 40 hours per week and are paid $300 or $500 per week (college graduates and those with a postgraduate degree, respectively). Successful applicants may be considered for long-term employment after the end of the fellowship.

To apply, please submit a statement of purpose; resume or CV; and three relevant writing samples tofellows@thebreakthrough.org. In your statement of purpose, please indicate why you are interested in working with theBreakthrough Institute and which of the three program areas you are interested in, making reference to Breakthrough's policy work -- i.e., climate and energy policy, conservation, or economic policy. For more information about the respective program areas, including a list of published reports and articles, see here; you are also welcome to refer to articles in theBreakthrough Journal. Writing samples should include at least one op-ed style piece and one research paper (these do not have to be published). Personal recommendations are welcome, but not required.

Applications are due February 15, 2012.
