Sage-Grouse Research Technicians

Job Description: Two wildlife technician positions are needed to assist graduate student on M.S. research project. One technician will help conduct a field experiment to assess the effectiveness of fence marking on reducing avian fence collision rates in sagebrush-steppe habitats (Feb 1 May 28). The other technician will be hired to assist in field sampling to estimate avian fence collision rates in sagebrush-steppe habitats (March 1 May 28). Both positions require extensive travel throughout south-central and south-east Idaho. Job duties include but are not limited to: handling bird carcasses, measuring and recording qualitative and quantitative characteristics of fence collision locations, assisting in experimental marking of fences, measuring microhabitat characteristics of rangeland vegetation, using hand-held GPS units and map and compass to navigate in the field, data collection and entry, mapping infrastructure locations on study areas, conducting fence surveys for evidence of avian collision, operating ATVs, and hiking up to 10 km daily in rugged terrain while carrying a 50 lb pack.
Qualifications: Required:
o Ability to work long and irregular hours under adverse weather conditions while maintaining enthusiasm and positive attitude
o Valid drivers license (must pass driving record check) and the ability to operate 4x4 vehicles in off-road winter/spring conditions
o Willingness to live in remote field sites in a group setting for extended periods of time
o Ability to collect and record detailed and accurate field data
o Physically fit with the ability to hike up to 10 km/day carrying a 50 lb pack
o Ability to follow directions and work independently without direct supervision
o Good communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with agency personnel and private landowners
o Ability to work with and handle bird carcasses
o Degree (or in pursuit) in wildlife, ecology, natural resources or related field

Preferred:
o Experience operating ATVs (including snow machines)
o Experience using hand-held GPS units and navigating with map and compass
o Experience pulling/living in campers in remote areas
o Interest in upland bird and/or sagebrush-steppe ecology
o Experience measuring rangeland vegetation
