Field Technician, Canada

Job Description: The successful candidate will assist in all aspects of field data collection for graduate research on Canada Lynx habitat use. The position will involve snow tracking Canada Lynx at their southern range periphery in central Ontario. The ideal candidate will be an individual comfortable carrying a heavy pack on snow shoes for long distances in remote areas. Snow machines will be used to access remote locations. Other activities will include habitat classification and identification of other species from snow tracks. Therefore, a familiarity with Ontarios flora and winter fauna is important.
Qualifications: Successful candidate must be a citizen of Ontario, Canada. Candidates should have or should be working towards a B.S. or diploma in wildlife science, biology, or a related discipline. A strong work ethic, physically fit, ability to work both individually and as part of team, communicate effectively with landowners and natural resource professionals, and a strong interest in wildlife/habitat relationships are essential. Relevant work experience in winter field research a plus. Thorough knowledge of the flora and fauna of Ontario. Experience using snow tracks and sign to identify species. Comfortable driving 4x4 vehicles with trailers, snow machines and using snowshoes to access remote areas in all weather conditions (extreme cold, heavy snow etc.) in rough terrain. Confident using maps, compass and GPS units.
The position is from January 4, 2010 through to April 30, 2010. A field vehicle will be provided. Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.
