Job Number: 19792 (Classification: Internships)
Title: SONGBIRD BANDING AND MONITORING INTERNS
Agency: PRBO Conservation Science
Location: SE Farallon Island, CA
Job Description: One intern needed from 10 Oct 5 Dec and another intern needed from 24 Oct - 5 Dec on S.E. Farallon Island, which is located 28 miles west of San Francisco, CA. Major duties include banding landbirds, conducting area searches, and participating in daily seawatches. Additional duties include data entry and proofing, cooking, and island/house maintenance. We provide boat transportation to and from the island as well as all food and housing on the island.
Qualifications: As a fall intern, your work would revolve almost entirely around bird migration monitoring. The bird diversity in the fall is extremely high. Over 400 species of birds have been identified on the island. During large migration waves, you may be responsible for knowing how to identify over 100 species of birds from all over North America based on brief field observations. In addition, you would be expected to be able to capture and extract large numbers of birds from mistnets, and properly identify, age, and sex them. Proficiency in identifying western birds is essential while familiarity with eastern birds is very helpful. As this is a very small and remote field location, applicants must be enthusiastic and be able to get along well with others. If interested, please email a cover letter, resume, and the email addresses of three references familiar with your landbird banding and survey skills to JIM TIETZ, PRBO Conservation Science (EM: jtietz@prbo.org). Applications will be considered until positions are filled.
