BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• BA/BS degree in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and 5 - 7 years of related work experience preferred.
• Experience in managing multiple projects and timelines.
• Experience negotiating complex agreements
• Supervisory experience a plus
• Experience working with computers.
• Fluency in both English and Spanish.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Yucatan Peninsula Program Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and advancing all aspects of TNC’s conservation programs within the Yucatan Peninsula. Responsibilities cover both forests and marine / coastal ecosystems. While this position is technically within the TNC structure, the Program Coordinator will be charged with servicing and supporting alliance-based efforts around a set of major projects.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Provide strategic vision. Provide strategic vision and direction to the Yucatan Peninsula Conservation Program, drawing on the interests and ideas of partners.
• Engage partners. Engage senior representatives of government, NGO, private sector and other partners, such as regional offices of federal agencies (CONAFOR, SAGARPA, SEDESOL, CONAGUA); Environment Secretariats in the Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche State governments; hotel operators and associations, ejidos, and NGOs.
• Build and support alliances. Oversee and support the establishment and operations of alliances that are critical for advancing priority conservation projects.
• Oversee project management. Oversee and support all project management needs for the Yucatan Peninsula Conservation Program, such as budget, work plans, funding proposals, and reports.
• Provide day-to-day management of staff. Manage a set of TNC staff who are assigned to the work in the Yucatan Peninsula.
• Support fundraising efforts. Provide support to fundraising efforts, including writing and editing of proposals, reports, and fundraising materials; meetings with donors; etc.
• Coordinate with TNC colleagues and partners. Coordinate with TNC colleagues across the organization, as well as with partners, and help draw on relevant expertise and support.
• Ensure accountability and compliance. Ensure program accountability and legal compliance.




REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• BA/BS in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and a minimum of 5 years related work experience required.
• In-depth understanding of conservation and development issues, including current trends and practices in conservation; forest, marine and coastal management; and livelihood / human welfare issues related to natural resources.
• General understanding of key Yucatan Peninsula contextual issues (e.g. ejidos, forestry, coastal tourism), with relevant work experience in the Yucatan Peninsula highly preferable.
• Strong skills and knowledge in the following areas: strategic visioning and planning, large project management, government and corporate relations, complex negotiations, alliance-building, and communications (written and oral, English and Spanish).
• General understanding of large-scale financial mechanisms.
• Fluency in Spanish and English.
• Ability to make sound decisions on legal, financial, conservation, and reporting issues.
• Ability to pull in resources and experiences from across TNC and other organizations where and when needed.
• Ability to work within very diverse, matrix-based teams.
• Ability to explain conservation practices and concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to manage time and diverse activities under deadlines, while delivering quality results.

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
• Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
• Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances.
• Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems.
• Cultivates and develops creative and often complex ideas to improve conservation strategies and achieve conservation outcomes.
• Negotiates and facilitates complex agreements with multiple stakeholders.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
• Makes sound decisions for TNC in the following areas: legal, financial, human resources, conservation, reputation.
• Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment.
• Performs tasks with minimal supervision.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. Establishes clear directions and sets “stretch objectives” to maximize conservation results.
• Supervise all aspects of program management within the Yucatan Peninsula, including, in particular: staffing, budget development and management, strategy development / refinement, annual goal-setting and work plan processes, and negotiating / contracting with vendors and consultants.
• Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external legal and other requirements.
• Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the program while controlling costs and administering budgets.
• Ensure that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs, and are allocated in the most effective manner.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Network and maintain regular communications with diverse external partners, particularly senior representatives of governments, NGOs, communal (ejido) organizations, and the private sector, such as regional offices of federal agencies (CONAFOR, SAGARPA, SEDESOL, CONAGUA); Environment Secretariats in the Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche State governments; hotel operators and associations, individual ejidos and ejido associations, and NGOs.
• Network and maintain regular communications with TNC colleagues across a diversity of units and departments.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
This position mostly involves work in an office setting, but occasionally will also involve trips to field locations characterized by variable weather conditions, remote locations, difficult and hazardous terrain, and physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may:
• require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain;
• present the possibility of injury;
• require long hours in isolated settings.
